Toddlers are learning to handle strong feelings while their language, impulse control and flexibility are still developing. A tantrum is often a sign that the moment has become too much—not a calculated attempt to upset an adult.
Start with safety
Move hazards away and gently block hitting or throwing. Use a few calm words: “I won’t let you hit. I’m here.” Avoid trying to reason through every detail while your child is overwhelmed.
Stay nearby and steady
Some children want a cuddle; others need space with a trusted adult close by. Offer comfort without forcing touch. Keep your voice and body language as calm as you can.
Reconnect and teach later
Once your child has settled, name what happened and practise a phrase or action for next time. You can hold the original limit while showing empathy for the disappointment.
If tantrums are unusually intense, frequent or concerning, discuss them with a qualified professional who knows your child.
