Sibling conflict is common. Children may be learning to share space, manage frustration and explain what they need. Adults can guide the process without expecting every disagreement to disappear.
Stop unsafe behaviour first
Separate children if needed and state the boundary clearly: “I won’t let anyone hit.” Make sure everyone is safe before trying to solve the disagreement.
Listen without assigning fixed roles
Give each child a brief chance to explain what happened. Avoid labelling one child as the troublemaker or assuming the older child is always responsible. Focus on the behaviour and its impact.
Coach a repair
Help children identify a next step: return an item, rebuild something together, take turns with a timer or agree on separate play spaces. An apology is most useful when it is sincere and paired with changed behaviour.
With practice, children can learn that conflict does not have to end connection.
